WITH
the “BYO Berries”
article in your August issue
(page
172).
My two-and-a-half-year-old
son was on a “fruit and veggie
boycott” until we suggested that
he pick some strawberries out
of his Grandpa’s garden in
Pennsylvania. The next thing
you know, strawberries became
his favorite food. He couldn’t
get enough! When children
are encouraged to help in the
growing and cooking of healthy
foods, they learn to love foods
that are good for them.

I SUPPOSE SIZE
is relative. I loved
the Fenmore family article in
July’s issue (“Squeeze Play,”
p a g e
132),
although I was surprised to
read that they considered an
1,800-square-foot house small.
My two-bedroom house is 650
square feet. My bath alone is
5-fect-8 inches by 7-fcct-3 inches.
We shoehorned a vintage claw-
foot tub (original to the house!)
Amazingly, there is room for
a toilet and a sink. My kitchen
is 8 feet wide. I have to laugh,
since 1,800 square feet is rather
large to me.

We asked: Do you
have a smart real-life
solution to share?
MY WIFE AND I
have “closet
weekends” to organize and
reduce clutter in our lives. On
rare weekends when we don’t have
a commitment, we pick a closet or
room and, with a large trash bag,
eliminate all of the things that we
don’t use or have not used in years.
We find operating with less clutter
is much more peaceful.

WE DID A SPRUCE-UP
of
OU1*
rural
Arkansas kitchen. We wanted to
keep the white tile backsplash, but
the existing 4-by-4-inch decorative
fruit-patterned tiles just didn’t
work with the new granite counter-
tops. My contractor removed the
old tiles and replaced them with
melon-colored glass tiles. I
searched the Internet and found
little copper-colored 2-by-2-inch
glass tiles that my local flooring-
store was able to order. After
some research about heat-resistant
glues, I attached the little tiles to
the 4-bv-4 ones on the diagonal
with clear silicone, and the result
was perfect! It beat replacing the
whole backsplash.

MY HUSBAND AND I
moved
into our current home in 2005
and were faced with repainting
and remodeling. The glaring
“elephant” in the living room was
the pink plaster kiva-style fireplace
with its shades of mauve chevron
tiles. The tiles are now covered
with layers of drywall compound
and finished to blend with the
other two tiers. The fireplace was
then painted several shades darker
than the walls. The original brown
fireplace screen was spray-painted
with heat-resistant black paint.
The entire conversion (drywall
compound, paint, pillows,
cushions, and votives) cost less
than $100.
